Tonight my Crohn’s awareness video aired on UTV news. I have been working with Fixers UK and they’re very lovely staff to make an animation to let people know what Crohn’s disease is and share some of my story.
When I first had contact with fixers it was about 6 months after my diagnosis, I wanted to do an animation where I wouldn’t be identified, I wanted to raise awareness but not necessary have people know it was me- to be honest I was embarrassed talking about Crohn’s, I didn’t know what to say.
After my initial meeting my health went down hill quite rapidly and I had long spells in hospital and even when I was at home I wasn’t feeling too well.. This put a delay on my work with fixers. When we met up again I was post op, a lot had happened and I really wanted to tell people what the disease was really like.
Along with making an animation (it’s a work in progress coming soon!) I was given the fantastic opportunity to do the broadcast piece, obviously this involved being public about my illness. Fixers staff have been amazing treating it with sensitivity and giving me confidence to share my story.
When I was diagnosed I could never have imagined raising awareness in this way but at the time I never knew the impact it would have on my life. I want people to have knowledge but more importantly show people that it doesn’t have to define you as a person.
